the town planned their celebration
on the 3rd, a Sunday night
parked a fire truck at the fairgrounds
hung a giant flag from the ladder
pointing at an angle
stretching as far as it would go
just another steeple stabbing
the air
waiting for the show

somebody shared some survey data
said half the country hasn’t been
happy in at least 2 years
it’s hard to find a smile
in survival
hard to let go
when in constant fear
they’re raising the rent
but we spend all we get
filling up our tanks
so we can get back to work
now some court of jesters
convinced they’ve moved
the country forward
have put us in reverse

in the evening
on the 4th of July
no cause for celebration
every firecracker fire
burns, quickly fading
as freedom slowly dies
